In-Depth Information
Amenities
In general, rooms tend to be small in Venice, and sometimes dark or awkwardly shaped as
per the quirks of ancient palazzi . Unless otherwise stated in our reviews, guestrooms
come with private bathroom, often with a shower rather than a bathtub. Business centres
are rarely well equipped, even in swanky hotels, since the assumption is that you're here
for pleasure. Only a few large hotels have a pool - mostly on the Lido. While increasingly
available, wi-fi doesn't always penetrate thick stone walls and may only be available in
common areas.
Buyer Beware
Not all hotels in Venice are grand: some are cramped, frayed and draughty, with lacka-
daisical service. Budget and midrange places around the train station tend to be especially
drear - sometimes despite glowing online 'reviews'. Note also that many hotels boast of
'Venetian-style' rooms. Sometimes this implies real antiques and Murano chandeliers, but
it can mean a kitsch version of baroque in rooms where the former charms have been re-
modelled out of existence.
