AZIENDA AGRICOLA FROZZA
( 0423 98 70 69; www.frozza.it ; Via Martiri 31, Colbertaldo di Vidor; ) Galera vines have grown on
this sunny Colbertaldo hillside for hundreds of years thanks to six generations of the Frozza
family, who have tended them since 1870. The result: a DOCG prosecco with remarkable
fragrance and complexity. The 2011 Brut is a particularly good vintage with fruity fra-
grances and a well-structured, mineral-rich body. Prices range from €4 to €9 per bottle.

AZIENDA AGRICOLA BARICHEL
( 0423 97 57 43; www.barichel.net ; Via Zanzago 9, Valdobbiadene; ) S Ultra-marathon runner and
vinter Ivan Geronazzo returned to his grandfather's vineyard in Valdobbiadene after years
of working at larger, high-capacity wineries. Here he tends just 7 hectares by hand, produ-
cing 60,000 bottles of natural, frizzante , Extra Dry and Brut prosecco with a pale, straw-
yellow colour and apple-and-pear fragrances. Prices range from €4 to €7 per bottle.

VILLA DI MASÈR
(Villa Barbaro; 0423 92 30 04; www.villadimaser.it ; Via Barbaro 4; adult/reduced €6/5; 10.30am-6pm Tue-Sat &
11am-6pm Sun Apr-Jun, Sep & Oct, Tue, Thu, Sat & Sun Mar, Jul & Aug, 11am-5pm Sat & Sun Nov-Feb; ) On a
vineyard-covered hillside is Palladio and Paolo Veronese's golden monument to the Vene-
tian bea vita (good life). Palladio set the arcaded butter-yellow villa into the verdant hill-
side, but inside Veronese upstaged the master-architect with wildly imaginative trompe
l'œil scenery. Vines climb the walls of the Stanza di Baccho and in a corner of the grand
salon the painter has apparently forgotten his spattered shoes.
In the villa's wine-tasting room, near the parking lot, you can raise a toast to the gifted
pair with Masèr estate-grown DOC prosecco . Just east of the villa's gates is Palladio's
Tempietto , a miniature copy of the Pantheon in Rome.
HISTORIC BUILDING
ASOLO
Known as the 'town of 100 vistas' for its panoramic hillside location, the medieval walled
town of Asolo has long been a favourite of literary types. Robert Browning bought a house
here, but the ultimate local celebrity is Caterina Corner, the 15th-century queen of Cyprus,
who was given the town, its castle (now used as a theatre) and the surrounding county in
exchange for her abdication. She promptly became queen of the literary set, holding salons
that featured writer Pietro Bembo.
