counter, which is filled with ready-made items like fresh seafood salads, house-made pastas
and speciality cheeses. Never mind that there's no seating available at this temple to local
gastronomy; ask counter staff to pair your food selections with a local wine from their
shelves for a gourmet picnic.

( 0444 32 61 68; Contrà Jacopo Cabianca 13; meals €18-25; 8.30-2am) It's cool, it's crowded and with
its floor-to-ceiling windows this is where Vicenza's beautiful people gather to see and be
seen. Fusion food includes basmati rice with shrimp and courgette, Caesar salads and clas-
sic grilled steaks, but you're not really here for the food. Do as the locals do and grab your-
self a cocktail or glass of wine and spend the evening exchanging glances and grazing
aperitivi .

the taste of summer in Maria's datterino tomato and mozzarella salad or nurse a glass of
Recioto with your stuffed quails or guinea-fowl pasta - Bersagliere's kitchen is first class,
although the bill is surprisingly democratic. What's more, the warm, exposed-brick interior
with its hanging mezzanine is stylish and intimate. Reservations are recommended.

( 0444 54 37 01; www.ristoranteaglischioppi.com ; Contrà Piazza del Castello 26; meals €30-40; dinner Mon,
lunch & dinner Tue-Sat) Tucked under an arcade just off Piazza del Castello lies one of the city's
oldest family restaurants. The owners are devotees of locally sourced products, from wild
forest greens to baby river trout, but without any pretensions; it's just what they know best.
The menu changes with the season, but they are famous for their baccalà alla vicentina
(dried cod on a bed of creamy polenta).
