Vicenza
Explore
When Palladio escaped an oppressive employer in his native Padua in the 1520s, few
could have guessed that the humble stonecutter would transform not only Vicenza (popu-
lation 115,900) but also the history of European architecture. Today, Vicenza's historic
centre, thick with Palladio's work, has been recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Despite its outsized legacy, this charming town remains quietly unpretentious - a fine
place to join locals lingering over rustic lunches. Frequent train connections make it an
easy day trip from Venice.
