In-Depth Information
» Get lost. Venice's ancient crooked calli (backstreets) often outwit the latest smart-
phones and satellite mapping technology. But there are no wrong turns here: unexpected
wonders await around every corner in this floating city. To return to major routes, just fol-
low the flow of foot traffic.
What to Wear
Costumes aren't strictly required at Carnevale, but they instantly transform visitors into
temporary Venetians - and everything goes with a long-nosed plague doctor's mask.
Gumboots are sometimes necessary in acque alte , and sensible flat shoes are always
advisable. Resort wear was apparently invented with Venice summers in mind: breezy, yet
luxe and vaguely nautical. But to really blend into the Venice scenery, you'll have to get
creative. There's no point being shy about colour here - have you seen the paintings?
Venice goes all out for gala arts events, including Venice Film Festival premieres, Bien-
nale art shows and opera opening nights at La Fenice. Dramatic entrances count: think
capes and Murano-glass statement necklaces, not cardigans and pearls. Accessories made
by Venetian artisans are always appreciated.
Be Forewarned
» Mind your step on slippery canal banks and stone footbridges, especially after rains
and acque alte (high water).
» Venice is not childproof. Not all canal banks and bridges have railings, and most
Gothic palaces have pointy edges.
» You're quite safe in Venice, even alone at night - but watch out for petty theft in and
around Venice train station, and crime around the mainland Mestre train station.
