This unlikely bastion of sophistication is lodged practically underneath an overpass. Da
Conte has one of the best wine lists in the region and uses much Slow Food-accredited pro-
duce in its dishes. Expect creative takes on classic lagoon cuisine, from roasted quail to
ginger-infused langoustines.
MODERN VENETIAN
Padua (Padova)
Explore
Though under an hour from Venice, Padua (population 214,900) seems a world away with
its medieval marketplaces, Fascist-era facades and hip student population. As a medieval
city-state and home to Italy's second-oldest university, Padua challenged both Venice and
Verona for regional hegemony. A series of extraordinary fresco cycles recalls this golden
age - including Giotto's remarkable Capella degli Scrovegni, Menabuoi's heavenly gather-
ing in the Bapistry and Titian's St Anthony in the Scoletta del Santo. With convenient train
connections and a dense historic centre, Padua is an easy day trip from Venice, although its
many and varied sites could fill a number of days. Be sure to stay overnight and watch the
piazze come alive as the highly social Padovans gather for their evening aperitivo .
