Lido di Venezia
BLUE MOON
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(Piazzale Bucintoro 1; 10am-6.30pm May-Sep; ; Lido) F Named after a glamorous nightclub
that once stood on the beach, the Blue Moon serves the spiaggia comunale (public beach)
at the northern end of the Lido. Designed by Giancarlo de Carlo, professor emeritus at the
Venice School of Architecture, in 1999, it marked the start of the Lido's most recent wave
of redevelopment.
The bizarre, sci-fi structure - which consists of a semicircular, domed rotunda, contain-
ing a bar and restaurant, and a 30m-high aluminium flag tower and extended viewing plat-
form - begs to be explored. Ramps and staircases lead to different levels and a raised dance
floor, while the semicircular shape of the main building creates a piazza-like effect on the
beach. In summer it's a hive of democratic events and activities, which is precisely what
Giancarlo envisaged.

porates the walls of the old Alberoni fort as key elements in a number of holes.
