I VETRI A LUME DI AMADI

( 041 523 80 89; Calle Saoneri 2747, San Polo; 9am-12.30pm & 3-6pm Mon-Sat; San Silvestro) Glass
menageries don't get more fascinating than the one created before your eyes by Signor
Amadi. Fierce little glass crabs approach pink-tipped sea anemones, and glass peas spill
from a speckled pea pod. You might be tempted to swat at eerily lifelike glass mosquitoes,
and the outlines of galloping horses in blue glass would do Picasso proud.

3.30-7.30pm Mon; San Stae) Paper is anything but two-dimensional here: paper maestro
Fernando di Masone embosses and sculpts handmade cotton paper into seamless raw-
edged lampshades, hand-bound sketchbooks, and paper versions of marble friezes that
would seem equally at home in a Greek temple or a modern loft. White gloves are handy
for easy, worry-free browsing; paper-sculpting courses are available by prior request.

Sat, 3-7pm Mon; Rialto) Rialto courtesans and their 30cm-high heels are long gone, but
Venetian slippers stay stylish. Pied à Terre's colourful furlane ( slippers) are handcrafted
with recycled bicycle-tyre treads, ideal for finding your footing on a gondola. Choose
from velvet, brocade or raw silk in vibrant shades of lemon and ruby, with optional pip-
ing. Don't see your size? Shoes can be custom made and shipped.

Gaga or channel Casanova at this atelier dedicated to the art of masquerade for more than
30 years. Sarria's commedia dell'arte masks are worn by theatre companies from Argen-
tina to Osaka - ominous burnished black leather for dramatic leads, or harlequin-
checquered cartapesta (papier-mâché) for comic foils, starting from €30. Watch as masks
are hand-cast, and one-of-a-kind marionettes take their first steps.
