Tintoretto's indoor fireworks are a near-impossible act to follow, but Scarpagnino's uplift-
ing, proto-baroque facade puts a brave face on the confraternity. Veined marble frames the
windows and doors, figures lean out from atop the capitals to greet visitors, and flowering
garlands around pillars provided welcome signs of life after the plague. Bartolomeo Bon
began the scuola in 1517, and at least three other architects were called in to finish the
work by 1588.
