SCUOLA GRANDE DI SAN ROCCO
You'll swear the paint is still fresh on the 50 action-packed Tintorettos completed
from 1575 and 1587 for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, dedicated to the patron saint
of the plague-stricken. While the 1575-77 plague claimed one-third of Venice's resid-
ents, Tintoretto painted nail-biting scenes of looming despair and last-minute redemp-
tion, illuminating a survivor's struggle with breathtaking urgency.
Assembly Hall
Downstairs, the assembly hall contains a handful of works on easels by Venetian A-list
artists including Titian, Giorgione and Tiepolo. But Tintoretto steals the scene with the
story of the Virgin Mary, starting on the left wall with Annunciation (pictured), where the
angel sneaks up on Mary at her sewing through a broken door. Tintoretto shows a light
