MUSEO CORRER
Napoleon filled his Piazza San Marco palace with the doges' riches, and took Venice's finest heirlooms back to
France. But the greatest treasure here couldn't be lifted: Libreria Nazionale Marciana, arguably Europe's first
public library, lavishly painted with larger-than-life philosophers by Veronese, Titian and Tintoretto.
Napoleon lost Venice to Austrian emperor Franz Joseph before completing this palace. The Hapsburgs loved
luxury, and after 10 years of restoration, Empress Sissi's suite is newly restored to its original brocade-swagged,
19th-century elegance.
Collection highlights include Jacopo di Barbari's minutely detailed woodblock perspective of Venice; bright-
eyed, peach-cheeked Bellini saints (Room 36); Carpaccio's St Peter stabbing himself in the head (Room 38); and
a wonderful anonymous 1784 portrait of champion rower Maria Boscola, five-time regatta winner (Room 47).
Antonio Canova's 1777 Orpheus and Eurydice are Neoclassical Ballroom scene stealers.
