After the fall of Venice's shipping empire, the curtain rose on the
city's music scene. A magnet for classical-music fans for four centuries, Venice
today supplies its own soundtrack of opera, baroque music and jazz. Given lim-
ited turf in this city of canals, sports events and rock concerts are understand-
ably constrained - but Venice has earned a global reputation for regattas and
cinema.
