Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) for the extension of use as a feed additive in all fish
species (EFSA 2012). This positive opinion results from the examination of a technical dossier
containing a documentation of the mode of action of the probiotic strain in the fish gastroin-
testinal tract, together with zootechnical data showing the efficacy of the probiotic, notably
to reduce deformities and improve mineralization in marine fish. Fish deformities represent a
major issue for fish hatcheries (especially marine fish hatcheries) and very few solutions are
available to the farmers. This achievement is an important milestone for the development of
the probiotic concept for aquaculture in Europe.
