On Piazza Verdi, the shabby-chic
Scuderia envelops the whole square on a good night. This being Bologna, the clientele is
made up of a socialist republic of pavement loungers, hairy goths, down-but-not-quite-out
students, and the odd stray opera-goer swept up in the nostalgia of their undergraduate
days.
The bar occupies the Bentivoglio family's former stables and features towering
columns, vaulted ceilings and arty photos.
English Empire

Despite the fact that Bologna never was part of any English
Empire, this pungent pub does a roaring trade in both Guinness and Bass (on tap), spilling
its patrons halfway up the colonnaded sidewalks. Early-morning joggers glide past the
remnants.

pleasant form of chaos! The sign outside this ancient Quadrilatero dive bar tells you all
you need to know - '

' (wine). It's as simple as that.
Bring in your own food, find some elbow room amid a cacophony of smashed students,
mildly inebriated grandpas and the odd misplaced Anglo tourist, and fight your way to the
bar for a sloppily poured glass of chianti, Sangiovese or Lambrusco. It's a spot-on formula
that's been working since - no word of a lie - 1465.

student-quarter cafe is a haven of wi-fi geeks, hungover revellers and lunch-breakers
choosing prepacked sandwiches. It offers coffee in takeaway cups, double shots, low-fat
milk and numerous other 'Americanisms'.
