heart of the atmospheric Quadrilatero district, the Drapperie is one of those 'hidden' ho-
tels encased in the upper floors of a larger building. Buzz in at ground level and climb the
stairs to discover 21 attractive rooms with wood-beamed ceilings, the occasional brick
arch and colourful ceiling frescoes. Breakfast is €5 extra.

The approach isn't promising: a short walk off Piazza Verdi along an alley that tipsy
drinkers use as an alfresco pee-spot. But, once inside, the journeyman Rossini is warm,
friendly and eager to please. Try to bag a room on the top floor, where strategically placed
skylights let the sun pour in.

Some 6km north of the centre, Bologna's two HI hostels, barely
100m apart, are modern, functional and cheap. Take bus 93 (Monday to Saturday, until
8.20pm) from Via Irnerio, bus 301 (Sunday) from the bus station, or bus 21B (evenings,
hourly from 8.40pm to 12.40am) opposite the train station.
