In-Depth Information
May
The month of roses and early summer produce makes May a perfect time to travel,
especially for walkers. The weather is warm but not too hot and prices throughout
Italy are good value. It's also patron-saint season.
Processione dei Serpari
Italy's most peculiar patron-saint day is held on 1 May in Cocullo, Abruzzo. The event sees
a statue of St Dominic draped with live snakes and carried in the Snake Charmers' Proces-
sion.
Festa di San Gennaro
Naples' Festa di San Gennaro has a lot riding on it: securing the city from volcanic and
other disasters. The faithful gather in the cathedral to see their patron-saint's blood liquefy.
If it does, the city is safe. Repeat performances take place on 19 September and 16 Decem-
ber.
Ciclo di Rappresentazioni Classiche
Classical intrigue in an evocative setting, the Festival of Greek Theatre, held from mid-
May to mid-June, brings Syracuse's 5th-century-BC amphitheatre to life with performances
from Italy's acting greats. ( Click here )
