Cadenabbia) Situated on the steep hillside above the lake, Al Veluu offers panoramic views
and home-cooked dishes based on seasonal produce from the mountains and the lake. The
terrace is a great place to view the Ferragosto fireworks on 15 August. Upstairs there are
two comfortable suites (€130-250 per night, €850-1200 per week) each sleeping four
people. The inn offers a pick-up from the dock.
CADENABBIA & MENAGGIO
North of Tremezzo, Cadenabbia is a key transport hub serviced by car ferries. Given its
lack of sights, it offers some good-value accommodation, such as the unpretentious Al-
berghetto della Marianna ( 0344 4 30 95; www.la-marianna.com ; Via Regina 57, Cadenabbia di Gri-
ante; d €80-95; ) , which has homely rooms with brass beds, parquet floors and small
balconies. The attached restaurant, La Cucina di Marianna (

www.lamarianna.com ; Via Regina 57, Cadenabbia; menus €21-50;
Wed-Sun;
;
Bellagio, Var-
enna) , is also a good place to eat.
A further 3km north, Menaggio (population 3260) has a cute cobbled centre and a cent-
ral square lined with cafes, which is perfect for lake-gazing. Menaggio is the jumping-off
point for Lago di Piano in the Val Menaggio, a remote valley connecting Lago di Como
with Lago di Lugano, which straddles the Italian-Swiss border to the west. Menaggio's
tourist office ( 0344 3 29 24; www.menaggio.com ; Piazza Garibaldi 3; 9am-12.30pm & 2.30-6pm
Apr-Oct, closed Wed & Sun Nov-Mar) has brochures on walking and biking.
ALTO LARIO
Beyond Menaggio, the northern stretch of the lake is known as the Alto Lario (Upper
Lario). It is far less touristed than the southern shore and is wonderfully scenic. At Rezzo-
nico there is a quiet pebble beach lined with wooden seats.
The towns of Dongo, Gravedona and Sorico once formed the independent republic of
the Tre Pievi (Three Parishes) and were a hotbed of Cathar heresy. Now they're more pop-
ular with watersports enthusiasts than Inquisitors. Gravedona (pop 2750), the largest of
the three, sits on a gently curved bay with views across to Mount Legnone. Comolakeboats (
333 401 49 95; www.comolakeboats.it ; Via Antica Regina 26) hires out inflatable boats (€65 for
two hours) and organises waterskiing (€55 for 30 minutes) and wakeboarding (€50 for 30
minutes).
