heart of the old town, this two-star hotel has a handful of apartments, each with its own
kitchen (minimum seven-night stay). If you're just passing through, its freshly spruced-up
hotel rooms (with breakfast) are simple but spotless. Friendly trilingual service adds fur-
ther kudos.
Hotel Palazzo Lovera
( 0171 69 04 20; www.palazzolovera.com ; Via Roma 37; s €85-115, d €120-140; ) A
French king and an Italian pope have stayed here, hinting at the Loverna's stately past.
Rooms are comfortable if not lavish, but the value for money comes with rare small-town
Italian extras, such as a gym, sauna and two affiliated restaurants, one of which (Delle
Antiche Contrade) has a deserved Michelin star.

Eating & Drinking
Typically for Piedmont, Cuneo has some standout places to wine and dine.
PIEDMONTESE
4 Ciance
( 0171 48 90 27; www.4cianceristorante.it ; Via Dronero 8C; two-course menu with wine €22; lunch
& dinner) Cuneo, like Alba, is one of Piedmont's curiously under-praised culinary power-
houses, and it has grown more powerful since the opening of the new 4 Ciance, where the
love of local food is evident in every forkful, and the warm, unpretentious staff serve
earthy but poshly presented food at decidedly un-posh prices.
Everything is homemade, including the bread, and the wine list is superb.
Arione
( www.arione-cuneo.com ; Piazza Galimberti 14; 8am-8pm Tue-Sat, 8am-1pm & 3.30-8pm Sun) This
1920s-vintage chocolatier invented the Cuneesi al Rhum - a large, rum-laced praline
wrapped in cellophane. The chocolates came to the attention of Hemingway, who made a
detour from Milan en route to Nice in 1954 to try them - there's a photograph of his visit
in the window.
