Convento dei Cappuccini
Monterosso's most interesting church and convent complex is set on the hill that divides
the old town from the newer Fegina quarter. The striped church, the Chiesa di San Francesco
, dates from 1623 and has a painting attributed to Van Dyck (Crocifissione) to the left of
the altar.
Nearby, the ruins of an old castle have been converted into a cemetery.

Unlike the other four towns, Monterosso has a credible stash of hotels to choose from.
Hotel Pasquale
( 0187 81 74 77; www.hotelpasquale.it ; Via Fegina 4, Monterosso; s €90-145, d €155-200; ) On
the cusp of the old quarter, this small-is-beautiful harbourside hotel is full of weird nooks
and crannies built right into the cliffside (with exposed rock to prove it). Rooms have a
luxurious, boutique sheen missing elsewhere in Cinque Terre and the owners are lovely.

La Poesia
( 0187 81 72 83; www.lapoesia-cinqueterre.com ; Via Genova 4, Monterosso; d €90-180; )

izia, Annetta and Aspasia after the women to which Nobel Prize-winning poet Eugenio
Montale dedicated his poems) occupy an early-17th-century house. Breakfast is served on
a terrace surrounded by lemon trees and the house has a regal quality that sets it apart
from the competition.
Hotel La Spiaggia
( 0187 81 75 67; www.laspiaggiahotel.com ; Via Lungomare 98, Monterosso; s/d €155/170; )

(beach) in the new part of town and its 19 rooms, terrace, garden and restaurant get busy.
