In-Depth Information
There's plenty of accommodation in the vicinity, but for a simple beachfront stay, head
to Camping Sabaudia (

May-Sep) , a decent campground immersed in Mediterranean mac-
people & tent €28-37;
chia (shrubland).
From Rome, Cotral buses leave from Laurentina metro station (line B) for Terracina,
stopping off at Sabaudia en route (€5, two to three hours depending on traffic).
Sperlonga
The pick of Lazio's southern coastal towns, Sperlonga is a fashionable summer spot. Its
attractive steeply stacked medieval centre buzzes throughout the season, and there are two
inviting sandy beaches set either side of a rocky promontory.
Other than the beach - and the great views from the top of the historic centre - the main
attraction is the Museo Archeologico di Sperlonga ( 0771 54 80 28; Via Flacca, Km1.6; admission/
reduced €4/2; 8.30am-6pm) just south of town. Here you can admire sculptures and masks
dating from the 2nd century BC, and poke around the ruins of Villa Tiberio , a sumptuous
villa used by the emperor Tiberius.
Near the northern entrance to the historic centre, Hotel Mayor ( 0771 54 92 45;
www.hotelmayor.it ; Via 1 Romita 4; s €60-110, d €75-140; ) offers simple, clean rooms, some
with balconies, and its own patch of private beach. Note that minimum stays are required
in some summer months.
Of the many eating options, the Pasticceria Gelateria Fiorelli (Via San Rocco 15; cones from €2,
aperitivi from €4.50; Mon-Sun) is a good bet for gelato, whilst up in the medieval quarter,
Gli Archi ( 07 7154 8300; www.gliarchi.com ; Via Ottaviano 17; meals €40-45) specialises in loc-
ally caught seafood.
To get to Sperlonga from Rome, take a regional train from Stazione Termini to Fondi-
Sperlonga (€6.90, 1¼ hours, hourly) and then a connecting Piazzoli ( www.piazzoli.it ) bus to
Sperlonga (€1, 10 minutes).
By car, Sperlonga is 120km from Rome. Take Via Pontina (SS148) and follow signs to
Terracina and then Sperlonga.
