This is
one of a new breed of restaurant-cafe-bars that are open all day. It serves breakfasts (eggs
Benedict etc), then lunch, dinner, burgers, club sandwiches, cocktails,
aperitivi
- you
name it, they've got it covered. The look is vintage Parisian glamour combined with
1990s New York City chic.

This pretty ivy-clad wine bar is bottle-lined inside, with watch-the-world-go-by
streetside seating in summer. Cuisine is Tuscan, so the beef is particularly good, but it also
serves imaginative salads and pizza in the evenings.

( 06 321 15 59; Via Margutta 1; meals €55; closed Jan & Aug; ; Spagna, Flaminio)
Ba-
bette is run by two sisters who used to produce a fashion magazine, which accounts for its
effortlessly chic
Fried Green Tomatoes
-style interior of exposed brick walls and vintage
painted signs. You're in for a feast too, as the cooking is delicious, with a sophisticated,
creative French twist (think
tortiglioni
with courgette and pistachio pesto). The daily
lunch buffet (€10 Tuesday to Friday, €25 weekends) is a good deal.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
FAST-FOOD PASTA
lunch 1-3pm Mon-Sat; Spagna) goes about its business as a fresh pasta shop, but at lunchtime it
turns itself into the neighbourhood's budget diner. Locals pile in to fill up on the daily pasta dishes
(there's a choice of two) eaten out of plastic bowls wherever there's room.
