Trastevere & Gianicolo
Over the river from the
centro storico
- hence its name, a derivation of the Latin
trans
Tiberim
or across the Tiber - Trastevere is one of Rome's prettiest and most vibrant neigh-
bourhoods, an atmospheric warren of picture-perfect cobbled lanes and colourful
palazzi
.
It was originally a bastion of working-class independence and while it retains a strong
sense of its roots, it's now a trendy hang-out full of restaurants, cafes, pubs and pizzerias.
Behind it, the Gianicolo (Janiculum) Hill rises serenely above the maelstrom offering in-
credible bird's-eye views of Rome.
