Tourist Offices Abroad
The Italian National Tourist Office (ENIT; www.enit.it ) maintains offices in 23 cities on five continents.
Contact information for all offices can be found on its website.
Travellers with Disabilities
Italy is not an easy country for travellers with disabilities and getting around can be a problem for wheel-
chair users . Even a short journey in a city or town can become a major expedition if cobblestone streets
have to be negotiated. Although many buildings have lifts, they are not always wide enough for wheel-
chairs. Not an awful lot has been done to make life any easier for the hearing- or vision-impaired.
The Italian National Tourist Office in your country may be able to provide advice on Italian associations
for travellers with disabilities and information on what help is available.
Italy's national rail company, Trenitalia ( 199 303060; www.trenitalia.com ) , offers a national
helpline for passengers with disabilities (6.45am to 9.30pm daily).
A handful of cities also publish general guides on accessibility, among them Bologna, Milan, Padua, Reg-
gio Emilia, Turin, Venice and Verona. In Milan, Milano per Tutti ( www.milanopertutti.it ) is a helpful re-
source.
Some organisations that may help include the following:
Accessible Italy ( 378 94 11 11; www.accessibleitaly.com ) A San Marino-based company that special-
ises in holiday services for the disabled. This is the best first port of call.
Cooperative Integrate Onlus (COIN; 06 712 90 11; www.coinsociale.it ) Based in Rome, CO.IN
provides information on the capital (including transport and access) and is happy to share its contacts
throughout Italy.
Italia ( www.italia.it ) Italy's official tourism website offers a number of links for travellers with disabilities,
covering destinations like Rome, Campania, Piedmont and the South Tyrol.
