Around Sassari
The countryside south and east of Sassari is a patchwork of rugged slopes and golden
wheat fields peppered by delightful Romanesque churches. The most impressive is the Ba-
silica della Santissima Trinità di Saccargia (admission €2;
9am-6pm) about 18km southeast of
Sassari on the SS597.
Some 25km south, near Torralba, the Nuraghe Santu Antine ( www.nuraghesantuantine.it ; adult/
reduced €9/6; 9am-8pm) is one of Sardinia's most interesting nuraghic sites, dating from
about 1600 BC. On weekdays, there are up to eight buses from Sassari to Torralba (€3, 1½
hours), although to get to the nuraghe from the village you'll have to walk about 4km.
On the coast north of Sassari, there are popular beaches at Platamona and Marina di Sorso
, both accessible by the summer Buddi Buddi bus (line MP) from Via Eugenio Tavolara.
From here, the SS200 hugs the coast up to Castelsardo , a picturesque town with a dra-
matic medieval centre rising out of a rocky seafront peak. Regular buses run from Sassari
(€3, one hour, 11 daily Monday to Saturday).
