The monumental stairway that ascends from busy Piazza Costituzione to Bastione San

collection of 15th- to 17th-century art, including four outstanding works by Pietro Cavaro,
father of the so-called Stampace school and arguably Sardinia's most important artist.
Orto Botanico

from the amphitheatre is one of Italy's most famous botanical gardens, bristling with palm
trees, cacti, ficus trees and local carobs and oaks. Ancient ruins tastefully litter the gar-
dens.

Galleria Comunale d'Arte

this gallery zooms in on modern Sardinian art, including works by island artists such as
Tarquinio Sini (1891-1943). There are terrific views of Cagliari's skyline from the palm-
dotted garden outside.

Chiesa di San Michele

is celebrated for its lavish 18th-century rococo decor. In the atrium note the four-
columned pulpit from which the Spanish emperor Carlos V is said to have delivered a stir-
ring speech before setting off on a fruitless campaign against Arab corsairs in Tunisia.
