CATHEDRAL
( www.duomodicagliari.it ; Piazza Palazzo 4; 7.30am-8pm Mon-Sat, 8am-1pm & 4.30-8.30pm Sun)
Cagliari's graceful cathedral stands proud on Piazza Palazzo. Apart from the
square-based bell tower, little remains of the original 13th-century Gothic structure - the
interior is 17th-century baroque and the Pisan-Romanesque facade is a 20th-century imita-
tion. Inside are two intricate stone pulpits, sculpted by Guglielmo da Pisa and donated to
the city in 1312.
TOWER
Torre dell'Elefante

( www.camuweb.it ; Via Università; adult/reduced €4/2.50; 10.30am-7pm Tue-Sun summer, 9am-5pm
winter) One of only two Pisan towers still standing, the Torre dell'Elefante is named after
the sculpted elephant by the vicious-looking portcullis. The 42m-high tower became
something of a horror show, thanks to its foul decor: the Spaniards beheaded the Marchese
di Cea here and left her severed head lying around for 17 years! Climb to the top for far-
reaching city views.
Anfiteatro Romano

( www.anfiteatroromano.it ; Viale Sant'Ignazio; closed for restoration) This amphitheatre is
Cagliari's must-see Roman monument. Although much of the original 2nd-century theatre
was cannibalised for building mat-erial, enough has survived to pique the imagination.
The amphitheatre was closed for restoration at the time of writing, but it's still worth tak-
ing a look from the outside.

Completed in 1305, it is built on the city's highest point and has grandstand views of the
Golfo di Cagliari.
