French classics such as
quiche lorraine
and
croque monsieur
, Breton oysters, salads with
impeccable vinaigrette dressing, a host of meat and fish mains, and a splendid
millefoglie

Taberna Sveva

€€
( 093 12 46 63; Piazza Federico di Svevia; meals €25-35; Thu-Tue)
Away from the tourist
maelstrom, the charming eatery is tucked away in a quiet corner of Ortygia. On warm
summer evenings the outdoor terrace is the place to sit, with al fresco tables on a tranquil
cobbled square in front of Syracuse's 13th-century castle. The food is traditional Sicilian;
expect plenty of tuna and swordfish and some wonderful pastas.

It's
a long and not particularly enticing hike to this seafront restaurant, but once you're there
you'll appreciate the effort. Inside it's all exposed brickwork and rusty farm tools; outside
on the terrace it's pure bliss, with the sun in your face, a cooling sea breeze and dreamy
views. Not surprisingly, fish features heavily on the menu.
