( 094 22 33 60; Vico la Floresta 1; meals €60) A meal on La Giara's rooftop terrace is a
Taormina classic. One of the best-looking restaurants in town, it's got a smooth art deco
interior and a piano bar worthy of Bogart in Casablanca mood. The menu features mod-
ern dishes grounded in island tradition, such as risotto with wild herbs, and squid served
in a Marsala reduction. Book ahead.

(Piazza Paladini 4; Tue-Sun) One of the best and most popular bars on this intimate square
just off Corso Umberto is this hip, gay-friendly spot with outdoor seating, an inviting vibe
and a fine selection of cocktails (from €5.50). Piazza Paladini is a perennial favourite with
Taormina's young, well-dressed night owls.
BAR
Bar Turrisi
( 9am-2am) High above Taormina, in the hilltop community of Castelmola, this whim-
sical bar is built on four levels overlooking the church square. Its decor is an eclectic
tangle of Sicilian influences, with everything from painted carts to a giant stone minchia
(you'll need no translation once you see it). Sip a glass of almond wine and enjoy the
view.

Shopping
Taormina is a window-shopper's paradise. The quality in most places is high but don't ex-
pect any bargains.

(Via Antonio Marziani) Sicily has a long tradition of producing ceramics and this is a good
bet for original designs. The workshop is on Via A Marzani (ring the bell for admission),
while around the corner on Corso Umberto I, the shop sells more traditional jewellery,
bags and hats.
