Sights
A short walk uphill from the bus station brings you to Corso Umberto I (abbreviated as
Corso Umberto), a pedestrianised thoroughfare that traverses the length of the medieval
town and connects its two historic town gates, Porta Messina and Porta Catania.

Taormina's premier attraction is this horseshoe-shaped theatre, stunningly
suspended between sea and sky, with its stage perfectly framing Mt Etna on the southern
horizon. Built in the 3rd century BC, it's Sicily's second largest Greek theatre (after Syra-
cuse). In summer it serves as the venue for international arts and film festivals. Visit early
in the morning to avoid the crowds.
Corso Umberto
One of Taormina's chief delights is wandering along its pedestrian-friendly medieval main
avenue, lined with antique and jewellery shops, delis and designer boutiques. Midway
down, pause to revel in the stunning panoramic views of Mt Etna and the seacoast from
Piazza IX Aprile
and pop your head into the charming rococo church,
