In-Depth Information
turnoff, about 3km west of Lipari Town, is easily reachable by car, scooter, or local bus;
follow the road towards Pianoconte until you see signs. From here, it's a steep 15-minute
downhill walk.
Come prepared for the day with water, sunscreen and a picnic lunch. In good weather,
Lipari resident Barni serves food and drinks from his rustic cave-like bar on the beach,
and also provides boat transfers to and from Marina Corta in Lipari (€5/10 one way/re-
turn), a half-hour voyage that offers unforgettable sunset views of Vulcano and the
faraglioni (rock spires) along Lipari's western shore.
BEACH
Eastern Beaches
On Lipari's eastern shore, sunbathers and swimmers head for Canneto , a few kilometres
north of Lipari town, to bask on the pebbly Spiaggia Bianca . Further north are the pumice
mines of Pomiciazzo and Porticello, where there's another beach, Spiaggia della Papesca ,
dusted white by the fine pumice that gives the sea its limpid turquoise colour.
Coastal Hikes
Lipari's rugged northwestern coastline offers excellent walking opportunities. Most ac-
cessible is the pleasant hour-long stroll from Quattropani to Acquacalda along Lipari's
north shore, which affords spectacular views of Salina and a distant Stromboli. Take the
bus to Quattropani (€1.90), then simply proceed downhill on the main road 5km to Ac-
quacalda, where you can catch the bus (€1.55) back to Lipari.
More strenuous, but equally rewarding in terms of scenery, is the three- to four-hour
hike descending steeply from Pianoconte, down past the old Roman baths of Terme di San
Calogero to the western shoreline, then skirting the clifftops along a flat stretch before
climbing steeply back to the town of Quattropani.
