COOKING
LECCE IN ONE DAY
Start the day with a cappuccino and pasticciotto (custard-filled pastry) at Caffè Alvino on Piazza
Sant'Oronzo. All that sugar and froth should be good preparation for the fanciful Basilica di Santa
Croce ( Click here ), worth at least an hour of your time.
To get a sense of Lecce's history visit the fascinating Museo Faggiano ( Click here ), then come back
to the present with a spot of window-shopping and browsing through the entertaining mix of shops on
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. Be sure to stop for a campari and soda at one of the many bars in town
before lunching on typical Puglian fare at firmly traditional Alle due Corti.
Walk off the pasta and beans by heading across town to the excellent Museo Provinciale ( Click
here ) . Or, for more fancy facades, Lecce's baroque feast of palazzi -flanked streets (like Via Palmieri),
churches and the cathedral ( Click here ) will keep you happily wandering till dinner-time. Crown your
day with a meal at Cucina Casareccia ( Click here ), where you'll feel like one of the family. Stroll back
to your hotel via the Basilica di Santa Croce, which is spectacularly lit up at night.
