Italy for Kids
Italy heaves with world-famous archaeological sites, museums and other heritage treasures.
But while Pompeian frescoes might thrill mum or dad, they may not excite youngsters.
Children's topics about the places you visit can help bring these sights to life. Suddenly,
those old ruins become the scene of heroic battles, mythical creatures or a blockbuster apo-
calypse. If visiting Rome with kids aged eight and over, one good choice is Lonely Planet's
Not for Parents: Rome .
Books aside, keep the pace low key, punctuating museum visits with plenty of gelato
stops. Always make a point of asking staff members at tourist offices if they know of any
special family activities, and venture into Italy's incredible countryside for some active fun.
Discounted admission for children is available at most Italian tourist attractions, though
age limits can vary. Most government-run museums and archaeological sites offer free
entry to EU citizens under the age of 18, though some staff may extend this discount to all
under 18s, despite the official 'EU-only' policy.
