In a tiny piazza a few minutes' walk from the ferry terminal
and Ancona's key sights are these comfortable, quiet digs. The apartments are nothing
flash, but they are central and well kept and come with kitchenettes for preparing a coffee
or snack.

'Grand' is a bit of an overstatement, but this early 19th-century
palazzo
still has the occa-
sional antique and opulent flourish. The high-ceilinged rooms are classically decorated in
muted tones, thought some could do with a spruce up. It's well placed for the ferries,
which you can watch come and go over a generous breakfast spread in the top-floor room.
Eating
Corso Garibaldi and Corso Mazzini are packed with restaurants, gelatarie and by-the-slice
pizza places, some of which can be fiercely packed at lunchtime (aim to arrive early).

For good, honest sub-€5 grub, you can't beat this jam-packed
pizzeria, where the pizzas fly bubbling hot out of the oven quicker than you can say

ioso!
And they are the real deal: thin, crisp, with chewable elasticity and oodles of flavour.
