Perugia's hostel is
rather charming inside, with 16th-century frescoed ceilings, tidy four- to six-person dorms
kept immaculately clean, a library and big country views from the terrace. There's a lock-
out between 11am and 3.30pm.

Buried in Perugia's me-
dieval maze of a centre is this charming 15th-century
palazzo
, where Luigi and Monica
make you welcome in one of three unique rooms. A Florentine architect has carefully in-
corporated mod cons and marble bathrooms into spacious quarters with brick vaulting,
lime-washed walls and antique furnishings, including an apartment with an 11th-century
well shower and a 13th-century tower room.
Breakfast is a handsome spread, with homemade cakes, fresh fruit and decent cap-
puccino. Incidentally, the church of the same name that sits opposite once harboured
Raphael's
Ansidei Madonna
altarpiece, now in London's National Gallery.

Ever fancied spending the night in a medieval castle? This is the real McCoy, with all
the turreted, ivy-clad, vaulted trappings you would imagine. The individually designed
rooms have been finished to great effect, with exposed stone, wooden furniture, handmade
wrought-iron beds and antiques. A pool with sweeping views over the rolling countryside
and a first-rate restaurant add to its appeal.
The hotel is situated 3km southeast of the centre; see the website for exact directions.
