Around Pitigliano
Tuscany's most significant Etruscan tombs are found within the Parco Archeologico 'Città del
Tufa' (Necropoli di Sovana; www.leviecave.it ; €5; 10am-7pm summer, to 5pm Sat & Sun Nov & Mar)
9km northeast of Pitigliano, near the postcard-pretty town of Sorano. Interpretative panels
in Italian and English impart interesting information about the site.
There are four tombs in total. The Tomba dei Demoni Alati (Tomb of the Winged Demons)
was discovered in 2004 and features a headless recumbent figure in terracotta. The
carving of a sea demon with huge wings that was the original centrepiece of the tomb is
now protected in a roofed enclosure nearby. The Tomba Ildebranda , named after Gregory
VII, still preserves traces of its carved columns and stairs and is the park's headline exhib-
it. The Tomba del Tifone (Tomb of the Typhoon) is about 300m down a trail running along-
side a rank of tomb facades cut from the rock face. Two arresting lengths of via cave (one
known as 'Cavone' and the other 'Poggio Prisca') are nearby.
On the opposite side of the site is the Tomba della Sirena and another via cava ('San Se-
bastiano'), which was closed due to safety concerns at the time of research.
