10.30am-4.30pm Nov-mid-Mar) As befits a town that has hewn the precious rock from nearby
quarries since Etruscan times, Volterra is the proud possessor of an alabaster museum. On
the ground floor are contemporary creations while on the two upper floors are choice ex-
amples from Etruscan times onwards as well as a re-created artisan's workshop.
The museum shares the same building as the pinacoteca .
Roman Theatre

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
(admission €3.50; 10.30am-5.30pm mid-Mar-Oct, to 4.30pm Sat & Sun Nov-mid-Mar) Used as a
rubbish dump in medieval times, this site was excavated in the 1950s to reveal a complex
dating from the 1st century BC. Two stairways and 19 rows of seating are easily identifi-
able. Truth be told, an admission ticket isn't really necessary, as there's a great view over
the theatre from Via Lungo Le Mura del Mandorlo.
Tours
Volterra Walking Tour ( 0588 08 62 01; www.volterrawalkingtour.com ; per person (min three) €10;
6pm Apr-Jul & Sep-Oct) offers just that - a one-hour English-language tour of the city by
foot. Operated by licensed tour guides, it leaves from Piazza Martiri della Libertà. Book-
ings aren't necessary and payment is cash only.
Volterra's tourist office runs a 90-minute Volterra by Night ( www.volterratur.it/envolterra-by-
night/ ; adult/child €10/free; 9.30pm Sat mid-Jun-mid-Sep) walking tour in English and Italian.
Advance bookings are essential.
