Terrazza Mascagni
(Viale Italia) No trip to Livorno is complete without a stroll along (and photo shoot of) this
dazzling 'work of art' - an elegant 1920s terrace with stone balustrades that sweeps grace-
fully along the seafront in a dramatic chessboard flurry of black and white checks.
Wedged between the terrace and Livorno's naval academy a little further south is the eleg-
ant soft apricot facade of Bagni Pancaldi , old-fashioned baths where you can swim, rent
pedalos and canoes, hang out in coloured canvas cabins and frolic in the sun.

HISTORIC QUARTER
The area known as Piccola Venezia or 'Little Venice' is crossed with small canals built
during the 17th century using Venetian methods of reclaiming land from the sea. Fortezza
Nuova OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (New Fort; 24hr) , built for the Medici court in the
late 16th century, is the quarter's main attraction although little of it remains. Canals link
it with the Fortezza Vecchia OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Old Fort;
, constructed

60 years earlier on the waterfront.
