That cheap accommodation shouldn't compromise on comfort is the
much-appreciated philosophy of this modern 10-room hostel occupying the 1st floor of
Baron Ricasoli's 17th-century
palazzo.
The reception area was once a theatre and 'dorms'
sport a maximum of four or six beds, high moulded ceilings, brightly coloured lockers and
chic flower-adorned screens. No credit cards for payments under €150. Breakfast in-
cluded.

Guests' paintings and artwork brighten up the walls at this private hostel near
Santa Maria Novella train station. Bright white dorms have up to 12 beds (those across the
garden are quieter), and there are washing machines, frozen meal dispensers and mi-
crowaves for guests. No curfew (knock to enter after 2am). Free two-hour walking tours
for guests, daily at 10am.

This medieval convent-turned-hotel away from the madding crowd in San
Marco is a stunner. Rooms are refined, tasteful and full of authentic period furnishings
and paintings. A couple of rooms have handkerchief-sized gardens to laze in, but the pièce
de résistance is frescoed room no 29, the former chapel.
