of the region. It is 250 meters long and 70 meters wide.

monasteries of Haghartsin, Goshavank, Makaravank, etc.
Dilijan is also known as "Little Switzerland" of Armenia. It is a large summer resort with
fresh air and evergreen forests. The comfortable hotels, rest houses and sanatoria will make
your holiday pleasant and unforgettable. Dilijan is rich in historical monuments, especially
prehistoric tombstones.
Haghartsin Monastery is in the lap of mountains.
St. Astcatsatsin church of Haghartsin built in 1281 deserves special attention. The high
16 - faceted dome, dominating over the other constructions, is ornamented with an arcade
the columns of which are triangle-shaped.
Goshavank Monastery is located in a woody area. It was founded in 1188 by the out-
standing Armenian scientist, chronologist and author of code of law Mkhitar Gosh. The
monastic complex is large and rather well-preserved. There was a time when Goshavank was
the center of medieval Armenian culture. The monastery had a book depository. The rect-
angular room next to the reading room stands out from the rest of the complex by its walls
of large unworked stones. The reading room of the monastery school itself is also unique. It
is a several-storeyed construction with the chapel and campanile on the upper floor (1291).
The main churches of the monastic complex are built in conformity with the wide spread ar-
chitectural peculiarities ofconstructions of the 10-13 centuries - a high domed central church
with 4 attached ones around it. They belong to the type of domed churches.
