situated near the observatory.
Amberd fortress and church. Amberd royal palace was erected in 11-13 centuries. It is
a two stoned construction with a huge staircase and is staked by walls and towers. Amberd
church was built in 1026 by Vahram Pahlavuni. It is a is simple but expressive architectural
construction with a dome.
The magnificent domed St. Grigor temple was erected in 666. According to the murals
and manuscripts of the construction it was built by Grigor Mamikonyan and his wife
Heghine in 660-670s. The tumbledown monument was restored (except the dome). The
walls are decorated with frescos which are damaged now and need restoration. There is the
image of Christ with a parchment in the left hand on the small dome of the sacristy at a
height of nearly 7 meters. The bas relief's of the pedestal are divided into 2 parts: acanthus
leaves with roses, grapes and pomegranate, forming a decorative chain along the big wall
of the sacristy. Besides the temple there are also the excavated ruins of the palace of the
Mamikonyans. In the vicinity, near the 19th century stone houses there are the ruins of the
walls of the palace of the 13-14 centuries.
Hovannavank Monastery is a great architectural monument of the 7th century. Its con-
strictions rise along the gorge of the River Kasakh. The monastery was built to the memory
of Hovhannes the Baptist. It is fenced with a wall of the 12th century and has two towers
facing westwards. The monastery is decorated with numerous frescos.
