POLITICAL SYSTEM
Armenia became an independent, democratic, social, legal state with a presidential sys-
tem of government. The president is the guarantor of the country's independence, territori-
al integrity and security. The president is elected by universal suffrage, secret ballot, for a
5-year term. He has wide competences, appoints and dismisses the prime minister and with
the latter's proposal the members of the government. According to the established order the
president appoints the magistracy, the procurator general and the procurators of structural
subdivisions. The president of the republic is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
The highest legislative body of the republic is the National Assembly. The National
Assembly elects the speaker and his two deputies within the whole term of its authority.
The supreme executive power is implemented by the RA government. The government
consists of the prime minister and the ministers. The authorizations of the government are
established by the constitution and laws. The structure and the form of activity are defined
by the president of the republic.
The RA territory is divided into 10 regions: Aragatsotn, Ararat, Armavir, Gegharkunik,
Lori, Kotayk, Shirak, Syunik, Vayots Dzor and Tavush.
The capital of the RA has a status of a region too. The regions consist of municipal and
rural communities. The regions have a state form of government. The regional governors are
appointed and dismissed by the government.
The communities have a local form of government. The local authorities are elected for
a 3-year term.
The president of the republic appoints and dismisses the mayor of Yerevan.
