The adventure capital of Switzerland, Interlaken is beautifully surrounded by lakes. But
it's easy to quickly be drawn to towns and villages that dot the sides of the magnificent
Alps stretching out before you. Names like Grindelwald , Wengen and Mürren are the
stuff of summer and winter legends.
INTERLAKEN JUNGFRAUJOCH

One of the world's great journeys takes three trains from Interlaken, each surmounting
tracks more precipitous than the last. You start in a beautiful river valley to Lauter-
brunnen and then change trains for a ride filled with views to the Alpine outpost of
Kleine Scheidegg . A final switch and you are on a train that bores up through the moun-
tain to the summit of Jungfraujoch . Once at the top, you won't be able to get enough of
the Alpine wonderland views (although you'll need to return to Interlaken before the last
trains.)
INTERLAKEN LUCERNE
Two hours From Interlaken Ost station to Lucerne's main station.
One hour On the A8 and Route 4.
Lucerne ( Click here )
Old medieval wooden bridges link the old town of this fabled city of cuteness. Wander
the lakefront for lovely views and take in plenty of attractions along the way. If you have
time there are more Alpine day trips here (such as Mt Pilatus and Mt Titlis ).
LUCERNE ZÜRICH
One hour From Lucerne's main station to Zürich's main station.
One hour Depending on traffic on the A4 and
A14.
Zürich ( Click here )
Another place that makes full use of its namesake lake, the largest city in Switzerland
combines conservative tradition with cutting-edge fun. In summer, swim in the lake from
one of many lakeside cafes and clubs or head to trendy districts and watch movies out-
side. At any time you can get lost in the city's excellent museums .
