This mythical 290km train journey has been a traveller-

Do it any time of year - in one glorious 7½-hour stretch
or as several sweet nuggets interspersed with overnights
in Switzerland's most glamorous Alpine mountain re-
sorts.

The looming Matterhorn almost seems to wave farewell as you head off on your great rail-
way adventure from Zermatt , the ski and holiday town at its base. From here, the narrow-
gauge railway winds north down the valley to Visp and Brig . Both are important cross-
roads and have been for centuries.
From here, the train swings northeast along the pretty eastern stretch of the Rhône Valley
through attractive villages such as Betten and Fiesch .

Hop off in Betten and catch a cable car up to car-free village Bettmeralp , where you can
spend the night and enjoy a beguiling Alpine town that has activities for visitors winter and
summer. From here you can go onwards up to Bettmerhorn or Eggishorn via cable cars
for a look at the Unesco-listed Aletsch Glacier . This ribbon of ice stretches all the way
back 23km to the Jungfrau region.
Back in the valley on the Glacier Express, the train trundles towards the Furka Pass
(which it circumvents by tunnel) and descends on the new mega ski resort of Andermatt .
In winter you can stop here and hit the slopes with their ultra-modern facilities.
