Accommodation
Switzerland sports accommodation in every price range and the reviews in this guidebook
run from budget to midrange and top end, arranged by author preference. Prices listed are
for high season and include breakfast (unless otherwise noted). They are categorised ac-
cording to the following guidelines:
Budget ($)These generally cost up to Sfr150 for a double, but this can differ slightly, de-
pending on city or countryside addresses.
Midrange ($$) With all the comforts of a private bathroom, TV, telephone and more.
Prices go up to approximately Sfr350 for a double, again depending on where you're stay-
ing.
Top end ($$$) Where you can wallow in pure unadulterated, time-honoured Swiss luxury;
starts at Sfr350 for a double.
Rates in cities and most towns stay constant throughout the year bar the Christmas and

mid-season (January to mid-February and mid-June to early July and September) begins to
get pricy, and high season (July to August, Christmas, and mid-February to Easter) is the
busy period. Seasonal differences are less marked at budget hotels.
Tourist offices have accommodation listings and most will make a hotel reservation for
you, for as little as Sfr5 or no commission. A handy resource for tracking down accom-
modation is www.myswitzerland.com .

fast - a room in a private home (anything from a castle to a farm), which includes break-
fast, often made from homemade produce. Some hosts will also, if you order in advance,
cook up an evening meal served for an additional Sfr20 to Sfr30 per person, often with
wine.
Tourist offices have lists of B&Bs in their areas - urban rarities but plentiful in the coun-
tryside areas - and 800-odd can be tracked through BnB ( www.bnb.ch ) , which also publishes
an annual guide (Sfr28). In rural areas, private houses frequently offer inexpensive
