Boats
Gliding along the clear waters of a Swiss lake aboard a boat is one of the nation's restful
pleasures. Scenic rides abound. Many of these are circular journeys aimed at tourists, but
in other places they are a great means of transport from one place to another. And in sum-
mer, you might find that your boat is a historic steam-driven classic, complete with toot-
ing horn.
The following are some of the best places to try out lake travel:
» Lake Geneva There's almost no place on this huge lake without a boat dock. You can
mix and match boat and train travel while enjoying mountain and vineyard views.
» Lake Lucerne Boats fan out from the heart of Lucerne and you can enjoy views of Alps
near and far while you glide along. A classic trip is a circular visit to Mt Pilatus, which in-
cludes a beautiful stretch aboard a lake boat.
» Lake Lugano One of the mildest Swiss places climate-wise, you get views of the lush
mountains along the lake and there are little villages to explore during a day of boat-hop-
ping.
Cable Cars
It's the stuff of movies (several): dangling cars
and tiny gondolas gliding up the side of an im-
possibly sheer mountainside to a summit with
stunning views. Getting there is truly half the
fun.
Most run through the year, serving skiiers in
winter, hikers in summer and view-lovers year-
round. Note: always check what time the last
cable car goes down the mountain, as this can
be as early as 4pm in some resorts.
Key types of Swiss cable cars include the fol-
lowing:
» Cable Car ( Luftseilbahn in German ,
téléphérique in French , funivia in Italian) Large
- often very large - cars that travel between sta-
tions dangling from cables, usually passing their
counterpart en route.
