Switzerland is unique, and nowhere is this more start-
lingly explicit than in its history. Commonly regarded as
Sonderfall Schweiz (literally 'special case Switzerland'), this
small landlocked country in Europe is a privileged and
neutral country, with a long history of independence to
support this. Despite the presence of global institutions
(the UN, Red Cross etc) and moves towards greater inter-
national cooperation, modern-day Switzerland remains
idiosyncratic, insular and one-of-a-kind.
