TICINO
The summer air is rich and hot. Vespas scoot along palm-fringed promenades. A baroque
campanile chimes. Italian weather. Italian style. And that's not to mention the Italian
gelato, Italian pasta, Italian architecture, Italian language. It's Italy Swiss style, with the
kinds of peaks and valleys commonly associated with the cantons to the north.
Bellinzona

Placed at the convergence point of several Alpine valleys, Bellinzona is visually unique. In-
habited since Neolithic times, it is dominated by three grey-stone medieval castles that
have attracted everyone from Swiss invaders to painters like William Turner.
The main castle, Castelgrande, stands upon a rocky central hill, which was a Roman
frontier post and Lombard defensive tower, and was later developed as a heavily fortified
town controlled by Milan.
