Need to Know
ADVANCE PLANNING
» Four months before Book your rooms for peak-season winter-sports fun at the big-name
resort towns like St Moritz, Klosters and Davos. Otherwise, the region is so relaxed that
you can just turn up and enjoy.
RESOURCES
» Graubünden Tourism ( www.graubuenden.ch ) Tourism info across the canton.
» Ticino Tourism ( www.ticino.ch ) Tourism info across the canton.
» Wine A big part of the Ticino experience is wine; get the Le Strade del Vino map-guide
at tourist offices, which details wineries around the canton.
GETTING AROUND
» Train Some of Switzerland's most famous and beautiful railways can be found in this re-
gion, including Rhätische Bahn's Glacier Express and the Bernina Express ( Click here )
over the Bernina Pass. Otherwise, all the main towns are well-served by trains.
» Cable Cars & Gondolas Like their brethren to the north, the Alps in this region are
laced by cables conveying people to dizzying heights for dizzying views as well as superb
hiking and skiing.
BE FOREWARNED
» Shoulder season When it's not summer and prime time for hiking and other outdoor
pleasures, or winter sports time (December to April), resort towns such as St Moritz all but
shut down (May and November can be very quiet). A few places in St Moritz do stay open
for people arriving off the Glacier Express.
» Davos The World Economic Forum - which only adds to the region's peak ski-season
mania in late January - has spawned other forums through the year that can soak up rooms
like a sponge. Check dates here: www.weforum.org .
