In-Depth Information
Activities
Zürich comes into its own in summer, when the parks lining the lake are overrun with
bathers, sun seekers, in-line skaters, footballers, lovers, picnickers, party animals and
preeners. Police even patrol on rollerblades!
From May to mid-September, official swimming areas known locally as Badis open
around the lake and up the Limmat river. There are also plenty of free, unofficial places to
take a dip. Official swimming areas are usually wooden piers with a pavilion and most of-
fer massages, yoga, saunas and snacks. Admission is Sfr6, and swimming areas are gener-
ally open from 9am to 7pm in May and September and 9am to 8pm from June to August.
Zürich with Children
In summer, spending time having a dip in the Limmat river or lake is a pleasant investment for the whole family. A
walk along the Planetenweg in Uetliberg combines views with exercise and education on the planets. Uetliberg is
on a 870m mountain top at the namesake stop on the S10 line.
Parents wanting a one-stop lesson in Swiss history should take their children to the Schweizerisches Landesmu-
seum ( Click here ), a clever and attractively laid out museum with interactive screens, book corners and even a
short slide from the highest part of the history section down to the beginning. With its garden setting, the Museum
Rietberg ( Click here ) can also be a clever compromise between art and the outdoors.
Sleeping
Prices sometimes head north for various major trade fairs (including those in Basel).
