Catch a quick and early train to nearby (2) Winterthur and make the walk up to
Schloss Kyburg , a classic old castle with good views. Consider visits to some of the fine
local museums or head right on to pretty (3) Schaffhausen , where you can make an easy
transfer to see the thundering wonder that is (4) Rheinfall , a 150m-wide waterfall on the
Rhine River . Continue on to (5) St Gallen , one of Switzerland's finest Old Towns,
where you can enjoy a delicious dinner. In the morning be ready for the rococo confection
that is the Unesco-listed Stiftsbibliothek , a medieval treasure worthy of all the accolades.
ZÜRICH TO WALENSEE Northeast Ramble
Whirl through (1) Zürich's OId Town, buy something shamelessly expensive in the luxe
shops and head for (2) Schaffhausen . Soak up the ancient charms of the walkable centre,
then get spray in your face at the waterfall spectacular at (3) Rheinfall . Now for the sil-
very blue beauty of Lake Constance . Cross over from (4) Kreuzlingen to the beautiful
medieval German town of (5) Konstanz . Catch a lake boat and explore. Various German
towns might tempt you to get off for a look around (there's always another boat coming
behind you), or just sit back and enjoy the Alpine views across the lake.
Spend a restful night in (6) St Gallen and ponder the magnificence of the Stiftsbiblio-
thek , which was the western world's equivalent of a mainframe back in the day. (7) Ap-
penzell is a good place for a long lunch; in fact, you might just slow down, stay the night
and enjoy an invigorating morning hike into the surrounding Alps.
Timeless 13th-century houses line the little lanes of (8) Werdenberg . Get a gander
over it all from the peak at (9) Säntis and then settle back along beautiful (10) Walensee .
